Sun shines on annual Harvest Days festivities

People be-bopped into Battle Ground last weekend and found plenty to do during last weekend's Harvest Days.
Overall, attendance was up compared to last year's event, said Battle Ground chamber manager Lynne Oldham. But the soaring temperatures Sunday caused some drop in attendance.
Popular events included the 4-H barn, the children's events and the chili cook-off. Oldham said many people commented that they liked the festival's 1950's music and theme, "Bebop to Battle Ground."

This year, the children's parade was moved to Sunday instead of the traditional Friday night. Oldham said the move was made because many said they had trouble getting their children to the parade after work...

Sauce tops fair categories in '91
By Elsie Deatherage for The Colombian

If you think it takes years of experience to create championship fair food, don't despair. Last year's top prize-winner at the Clark County Fair was a first-timer.
Jerry Fischer's barbecue sauce garnered a blue ribbon. Even better, the fair's food-preservation judge chose his sauce for the Judge's Award, the top prize among 760 canned, frozen and dried foods.
Since then, Fischer and his wife, Era, have marketed his Bootleg Spicy Barbecue Sauce in Washington.
Initially, Fischer made the sauce at his Hazel Dell home. Now Fire Mountain in Clackamas, Ore., makes it. |
|
It's available at Marketplace Grocery Store, 7808 NE 94th Ave., and the St. Johns IGA Grocery Store at 2109 St. Johns Blvd.
This year, he plans to enter his sauce in the Multnomah and Washington county fairs in Oregon, in several Colorado fairs, and possibly in the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup. However, the Western Washington Fair requires a recipe, and Fischer is obviously reluctant to reveal that.
Look for his sweet and sour sauce at the Clark County Fair.

It's something chili connoisseurs get feverish about.
Mouth-watering memories will again have chili fans gathering at the steaming pots which are becoming legend at the festival.
The annual chili cook-off contest will include four-year "people's choice" winners Harvey Grice and John Mivshek and their "Spirit of the West" team.
Winners of last years Judge's Taste and Showmanship Awards were Jerry Fischer and Dale Sugden of Vancouver, with a bourbon-laced "bootleg" chili.

Stoves light up at 11 a.m., Saturday.
By I p.m., visitors who purchase taster/ballot kits for $2 will be able to savor the various recipes and vote on the "people's choice" award. Judging starts at 5 p.m., and activities end at 5 p.m.
Fire District 3 chief Dennis Mason and assistant chief Dan Yager were "people's choice" runners-up last year. They and other teams are gunning for top honors with concoctions of ingredients far more classified than Loral missile technologies.
Look for the smoke and wagons at the Pacific Rock Products, across Main St. from Fairgrounds Park.
